"American Wake"
From 1846-1850 famine had stricken Ireland and as
many as one million people died of malnutrition or
starvation. For many, their only hope of survival was to
board the over-crowded ships bound for America
(sometimes called "coffin ships").
Families would gather and pray and say their
good-byes, knowing that it would most likely be the last
time they saw one another. This gathering was
commonly referred to as an "American Wake"
